Can I claim training courses?
Training that keeps existing skills up to date is claimable. Training for a brand-new trade is not.
Courses, certifications and renewals that maintain or update skills you already use in the trade are allowable: CSCS and CPCS renewals, first aid, refresher courses, a ticket that keeps you compliant on site.
Training to acquire skills for a new line of work is different: HMRC treats that as capital, not a running cost, so it isn't deductible. A plumber's gas-safety refresher is in; the same plumber's photography diploma is not.
Quick answers
Is a CSCS card renewal claimable?
Yes. Renewals and refreshers that keep existing trade skills current are allowable business expenses.
Can I claim a course to start a new business line?
No. Training to acquire skills for a new trade is not deductible for a sole trader; the allowable case is maintaining or updating existing skills.
